Abstract

As a consequence of large scale development in smart charging schemes, Electric Vehicle's capability is exploited to assist Independent System Operator in frequency regulation by adjusting their real-time charging or discharging power in accordance with the Area Control Error signal. This paper investigates the role of EVs contributing in primary frequency regulation. A SOC based V2G control scheme is proposed to determine the EV charge-discharge status and regulation power. An 11 bus power system network is utilized to examine the response of EVs in frequency regulation. The impact of disturbances in system frequency has been evaluated considering two different scenarios: non-availability of grid connected EV's and EV's providing frequency response. An EV fleet of 500 vehicles is assumed in Area 1. Further, a Transient Frequency Deviation Index is used to assess the severity of the frequency transients in both the scenarios. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed scheme whereby EVs stabilize the grid frequency by injecting the power in real-time
