The significance of the figure of Mykola Kolessa in the establishment of the Lviv Conductor School

Abstract

The article analyzes the historical significance of the figure of Nicholas Filaretovych Kolessa in the establishment of the Lviv conductor school. The essence and functional features of conductor schools are explained. The art of conducting is proved to be a specific area of musical and performing activities. The combination of individual and group forms of activity, the integration of the main types of musical performance, a concerting activity considering the listening audience, the search for unconventional ways of doing rehearsal make choral sessions one of the important component in the education of future professionals. The orientation of conductor choral art in an authorial style of interpretation of musical work has led to the increasing the number of choral methodical literature and musical periodicals, where an important place is given to the problems of choral performance: “Artistic journal”, (the organ of “Singers' communities union”), “Musical journal” (the organ of the Lysenko Musical community”), journal “Bojan” (Drohobych choral community “Bojan”), “Ukrainian music”, journal, which was published by “Ukrainian professional musician union”. A significant achievement in the professionalization of conductor and choral art of Galicia was the publication "Conducting adviser" and several choral repertories digests edited by F.Kolessa and Z.Lyska. The attention is also focused on the fact that the pedagogical handwriting of M.Kolessa was largely determined by the overall high culture and erudition, deep knowledge of pedagogy, psychology and the ability to use them in teaching and education. It is known that during the early educational activities the maestro preferred the "authoritarianism" with a great rigor and a demanding of precise following of instructions, and desired to do just about anything in the classroom with the students, even the smallest details. However, later over the evolution of educational views "democratic" principles took over. "One of the characteristics of his educational principles was the ease in communication, an acute instant reaction to the work of student which often promotes some improvisation in conducting classes. The basic educational principles and the specific of the process of training conductors is proved.
