The article is devoted to the consideration of the concept of "life" and "death" in the Korean literature of the 50–60s of the XX century. The role of Korean literature in the transmission of the spiritual values of the people, in the formation of their consciousness is highlighted. The period of the foundation of modern Korean literature, its new trends and forms were characterized. The in- fluence of external factors on the orientation of Korean literature were elaborated. In the late 1950s, Korean lit- erature revealed a tendency to turn to a new life guidelines, unacceptable ideology and system that contributed to the war. The main role of the revolution of April 19, 1960 during the formation of Korean literature, that was freed from the consequences of the wounds inflicted by the war, from spiritual stiffness, is substantiated. Korean literature raised real problems of finding the meaning of life, the reflection of personality, its individual qualities and traits. The influence of existentialism on Korean literature of the 50–60s of the XX century is analyzed on the example of the work of the poet Sanben and the novelist Choi In-hoon. The spiritual emptiness of a person, the complete absence of ideals, motives of hopelessness, death, and the transience of life were revealed
