Abstract

Speciation of complexes of Pb(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) with L-Histidine and 1,10-Phenanthroline have been studied by using pH metric method . The titrations were carried out in the presence of different relative concentrations of metal ions (M) to primary (His, L) and secondary (Phen, X) ligands (M:L:X = 1:2.5:2.5, 1:2.5:5.0, 1:5.0:2.5) with sodium hydroxide in varying concentrations (0–14 % v/v) of Propylene Carbonate–water mixtures at an ionic strength of 0.16 mol L-1 and at a temperature of 303.0 K. For the ternary complexes Stability constants were refined by using MINIQUAD75.The species MLX and ML2XH were obtained. Based on the dielectric constant of the medium, effect of the solvent on the speciation was studied. The best fit models were selected based on the statistical parameters and possible structures of the complex species were presented.
