Abstract

In recent years a large demand has been placed on the transmission network. These demands will be continuing to increase because of heightened competition among utilities. So there is a need of finding a solution to limit the usage of the existing system to control the line flows, increase loadability, to decrease losses while improving the voltage levels at buses. In these situations, Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices assume a significant job in increasing system performance and liability. These FACTS devices whenever placed optimally can be viable in giving voltage support, controlling power flows, and thereby bringing down the system losses. Here FACTS devices SVC, STATCOM, TCSC have been considered for optimal placement. Here these devices have been placed individually and simultaneously for increasing the performance of the system. The Artificial Bee Colony algorithm (ABC) has been developed for placement of the above-said FACTS devices. The effect of these devices in lowering losses, increasing the loadability has been observed by placing at optimal locations dictated by ABC algorithm. The results have been validated on the Indian Utility UPSEB-75 bus system.
