Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus described under the umbrella of Prameha in Ayurvedic Classics is known to mankind since long. Due to fast changing life style and increased consumption of high fat diets, junk food and decreased physical activities, especially engineered out exercise from daily life both in the work place and leisure have contributed in rising burden of Type 2 Diabetes mellitus and other non-communicable diseases. These life style changes when combined with increasing longevity form the basis of type 2 diabetes epidemic that India is witnessing today. As per Ayurveda, Madhura, Guru, Abhiyshandi dietetic articles indicating of indulgence in high calorie diet along with leisurely life style devoid of physical exercise plays a major role in the manifestation of type 2 Diabetes mellitus. References regarding life style intervention along with drugs have been mentioned in the classics in context of prevention and management of Diabetes mellitus. Awareness regarding Pathya (Nutrition health education) in the form of life style modification can play major role in prevention, management and control of complications of Diabetes mellitus which have been dealt in details in the present article which can be adopted for community based health education programme for creating Diabetes free society.
