Development and Characterization of In-Situ Gel for Ophthalmic Formulation Containing Acyclovir

Abstract
Acyclovir is acycloguanosine antiviral which is used in the treatment of herpes simplex keratitis. Acyclovir drops are required to be instilled frequently in the eyes (5 times a day), as they exhibit short precorneal residence time and poor bioavailability due to rapid elimination induced by tear turnover, blinking, and drainage of formulation. Moreover, application of its ointment leads to blurring of vision which results into patient non compliance. It was, therefore, thought worthwhile to develop an in-situ gel formulation using a suitable phase transition polymer to effectively deliver the drug into eyes with sustained and prolonged release and enhanced drug bioavailability leading to effective management of herpes simplex keratitis.
