Abstract

ABSTRACT Aggregate is one of the main ingredients in producing concrete. It covers 75% of the total for any concrete mix. The strength of the concrete produced is dependent on the properties of aggregates used. The aim for this project was to determine the strength and durability characteristics of high strength structural concrete by using recycled coarse aggregates with papercrete, which will give a better understanding on the properties of concrete with recycled aggregates. The scope of this project was to investigate the possibility of using low cost recycled coarse aggregates as an alternative material to coarse aggregate in high strength structural concrete. The Purpose of this study is to investigate mechanical properties of Papercrete such as compressive strength and modulus of elasticity due to paper mixing ratio. Papercrete is made up of cement and waste paper. People have been using papercrete without a clear understanding of its structural properties. However these properties of Papercrete vary with paper mixing ratio. Accordingly, in this study, the papercrete which has variety paper mixing ratio was produced for finding out mechanical properties of papercrete. To obtain some mechanical and physical parameters of papercrete, several laboratory tests were performed. The experimental results of papercrete will provide some recommendations for using papercrete. The experimental investigation were carried out using detailed strength and durability related tests such as compressive strength test of cubes, split tensile strength test of cylinders and flexural strength of beam. The tests were conducted by replacing the coarse aggregates in high strength concrete mixes by and 100% of recycled coarse aggregates and also test conducted by using 20% & 40% of papercrete used as recycled aggregate. From the experimental investigation it was found that recycled coarse aggregates can be used for making high strength concrete
