PROMINENT UKRAINIAN SCIENTIST VOLODYMYR BETZ AND HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEUROANATOMY

Abstract

History of Ukrainian science is rich in names of people who were able to significantly accelerate its progress and promote significant achievements. One of these was Vladimir A. Betz - Professor, Head of the Department of Anatomy of the Kiev Imperial University of St. Vladimir for 22 years (1868-1890). During his scientific activity at the university, VA Betz has written a lot of work, but most znachuschee his discovery was connected with the study of the structure of the central nervous system. Open them giant pyramidal cells in the 5th layer of the cerebral cortex, known as Betz cells, clarified the anatomy and physiology, in a complex, and at the same time interesting systems of the human body, as well as become an impetus for the further development of the global and modern neuroanatomy, in particular. Today, throughout the world there is no textbook on anatomy, histology, physiology and neurology, which would not have described these cells. For his discovery, VA Betz was awarded numerous medals and awards, received repeated offers to sell his collection of drugs that he himself has made. However, Vladimir A. Betz as a dedicated patriot of his country, has presented all the materials department of human anatomy, where he worked all his life. This article reflects the main milestones of the life of the scientist, as well as the discovery of the giant pyramidal cells.
