Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the opinions of candidate teachers of Turkish language on skills required to use dictionary. It should be kept in mind that the most important milestone of a language syntax is phrases and having a competence for it is a point to struggle for during learning process. Being able to use dictionary is remarkably important in terms of developing vocabulary competence and comprehension of it. In addition, it is aimed at helping the teachers, the most important component of language teaching, to have sufficient vocabulary power during education. It is only possible to obtain the language delicacies, components of rich language syntax by making use of vocabulary created either for overall objectives or specific objectives. However, it could be only achieved through being successful in reading, listening, watching, speaking, writing and word power. Otherwise, such teachers as the ones who give priority to teaching grammar and who don’t teach though enough writing skills and who are in favor of teaching rules based on learning by memorizing will be trained. In order to get data, a questionnaire in form of five-likerts has been prepared for “dictionary usage habits”. The subjects of this study consist of students from TLT (Turkish Language Teaching) department in Faculty of Education in University of Fırat. t test has been used for independent groups according to gender variability, and analysis of variance has been used for other multiple variability. It is aimed at determining the habits of dictionary use of candidate teachers and their competences.
