Abstract

The article observes the role of art in education, didactic value of the paint- ings which contributed much to the success of the Reformation. The attitude of its leader Martin Luther is analyzed, who fi rst considered pictures as a danger, but later recognized their educational potential. This article describes how functions of the paintings extended, new trends in art and new forms appeared. It is proved that Luther’s attitude caused the emer- gence of Protestant world of pictures, helped to prevent massive plundering and destruction of cultural property at that time
