Visual communications in architectural environment

The article defines the concept of “visual communications” from the perspective of professionals working in the field of architectural environment design. Opinions of architects and designers, who have studied the information properties of the urban environment, are presented. Transformations of attitudes and trends concerning the formation of the city visual environment in recent decades are traced. Ideas of organization and design of visual communication means are submitted. Concepts of harmonization of visual-communication space of the city are considered. Some contradictions in understanding the category of “visual communications” by architects and designers on the one hand and representatives of other professions and scientific fields on the other hand are revealed.
