Abstract

The study covers the formations of Belkıs tombolos which one of the coastal accumulation process taken place on the southern part of the Marmara Sea. This area is differ than that of the surrounding mountainous areas in terms of vegetation cover and economic activities. The lower part of the area extending Edincik Paleozoik massif in the south and Kapıdağ granitic massif in the north has been converted into land during the period covering the end of Quaternary and historical time. The alluvial flat land seperating between the. gulfs Bandırma ve Erdek has led to the formation of coastal beach. Its wideness is 1700 m and longness is 1500 m. Today in the vicinity of the tombolo there are different morphological unites such as coast sands in the west, alluvial areas which has terraced morphological character are in the north and south and bag is in the center of this tombolo. The Kapıdağ peninsula, rising up to 800 m as a horst is an continuation of the highland oqcuring in the south in terms geological and morphological properties. Present morphological appearance has come into.scene as the result of tectonic movements occured the end of the Pliocene and Early Quaternary. The settlement history of Kapıdağı peninsula named Arktonnesos in the ancient ties, But to learn the peninsula started with the Kyzikos, which phaces in.fthe north of Belkıs tombolo and was a famous harbour city, established by Milets at first quarter of 7th century B.C. The.historical references relating to Kyzikos antic city illuminate, explain the formation of Belkıs tombolo covering the Late Quaternary and historical period.
