Assam is the land of a number of ethnic groups each having a distinctive identity of its own. But remarkably this ethnic diversity has hardly impeded culture in the state. With the diversity in their customs and traditions these groups have lived side by side for ages, shared a common history and evolved in the process of culture that may aptly be called ‘Assamese Culture’ (Gogoi, 1993).
