Abstract
Nowadays the Caucasus is perceived as a region where bloody conflicts and various “frozen” disputes are going on among societies/states. However, in the historical process of this region, periods of intensive regional attempts for stability and partnership can be observed. Even elites in the region had made several attempts to live under the confederative state. This article mainly focuses on partnership tendencies in the Caucasus at the beginning of the 20th century, attempts for the confederative state (Seim), regional conference initiatives in the independent years of 1918-1920, confederation aspirations of the Caucasian emigrants in Europe, and Soviet experience (Zakfederatsia) in the 1920-1930s. Then it briefly examines various partnership proposals of the regional states in the second independent period after 1991. The article argues that this rich historical experience and previous partnership patterns should not be ignored in finding solutions to the current problems
