Abstract

The imitation (tashabbuh) of Muslims to Non-Muslims either in their choice of dress or their attitudes, behaviors and forms of worship is forbidden by Islam through various textual rulings (nass). There are numerous warnings concerning this issue in the Qur'an and Prophetic traditions (hadith). Among these warnings is the tradition “"Whoever resembles a people is one of them," which is one of the most well-known that indicates a general command prohibiting Muslims imitating Non- Muslims. A proper understanding of the Prophetic tradition is of great importance in today's world where dress has become monotype. In addition, a correct understanding of the other traditions can be made possible through the understanding of the meaning of this tradition. In this article, the sources that include this tradition along with the correctness (sihha) of the tradition have been presented followed by a discourse regarding the concept of “tashabbuh” (imitation) and the saying of “one of them.” The way in which these two inscriptions were understood in classic annotations of the hadith points to the reason for such a prohibition and the hazardous consequences in Muslim societies in the part of the reason of prohibition of imitation. Nevertheless, the examples of the prohibition especially in the field of dress are influenced by customs and are mostly changeable. Therefore, specifying the exact borders of textual ruling (nass) and custom, and truly understanding the reasons of the prohibition are of great importance. The evaluation of both the reasons for the prohibition and fluctuant world conditions along with the classic interpretations are indispensable to properly be able to comprehend the tradition (hadith). In the article, all these aspects of the subject have been studied and the attained results have been numerated.
