Abstract

Tâj al-Dîn Ibnu's-Subkî (d. 1370) is known by bringing together information about al-djarh wa'l-ta'dîl methods for the first time in his tractate qaide fi'l-djarh wa'l-ta'dîl. This topic has of course been researched by many other hadith scholars. However, by giving information regarding science of rijal, tabaqat, science of hadith and usul al-fiqh, he shows a methodical approach of exculpate in criticism of narrators. He determines al-djarh wa'l-ta'dîl information together as his faqih identity. This article describes the basic principles of his approach to al-djarh wa'l-ta'dîl, and particularly his determination of criticism of narrators will be discussed. These rules to be followed by a hadith of critic will be researched from the book mentioned above and from Jam'u'l- Jawami' and It will be presented with examples by being exploited. The Works of Ibnu's-Subkî called Qaide fi'l-djarh wa'l-ta'dîl and Jam'u'l-Jawami' are not solely written on the features of hadith critics. However, in these Works Ibnu's-Subkî, who is also canonist, also emphasizes the basic features of a muaddil narrator. Based on the discussions of topics at his time, he indicates practical results of refutation and amendment. He follows the traditions of former scholars but he does not have bigotry. He emphasizes the need to assess the discussions of the former scholars accurately. The religious and practical aspects of this attitude is of great importance for a hadith scholar who does critics of hadith narrators. As a matter of fact the hadith narrator should not act on doubts but have certain proofs when he is refuting or amending the narrator.
