Periodontitis and tooth loss among diabetic patients

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder of carbohydrate, protein, fat due to increased blood glucose levels. Periodontitis has been described as sixth complication of diabetes.The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of periodontal disease and missing teeth in a group of diabetic patients (n50)in Indian population, compared it with normal individuals. The results showed that missing teeth and periodontal disease was significantly higher in diabetic patients than the control group (p 0.001). The periodontal disease was found to increase with the duration of diabetes.
