Abstract
The article is devoted to extraordinary manifestations of Ukrainian patriotism which were expressed in marriages. Some representatives of the Ukrainian intelligentsia (T. Rilski, B. Poznanski, A. Mikhalevich and others) were married to peasant women. These facts are interesting from the point of view family history and intellectual history, but they haven't been analyzed sufficiently in modern historiography. These facts are represented in archival and published documental sources – letters and memoirs. Author made an attempt to understand the motivation of misalliances between well-educated men, characterize relations in these families. Also had been considered the perception of misalliances among Ukrainian intelligentsia in general. Author came to the conclusion that unequal matches were rare and were perceived negatively not only by conservative people but also by intelligentsia.
