Abstract
The article is dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the outstanding Russian archeologist Anatoly Nikolaevich Kirpichnikov. It contains a brief outline of his academic career and the stages of creative growth from post- graduate student to Professor. His outstanding merits in studying the problems of weapon and military art history of 10th-15th-century Russia are underlined, as well as an important discovery of sword blade maker stamps, their description and classification, which have generated a new source study trend devoted to blade epigraphy. A.N. Kirpichnikov's contribution to the study of historical problems related to the state and urban development processes in Ancient Rus' and the role the Ladoga and the Scandinavians had played in these processes is highlighted. His contribution to the scientific proof of Kazan 1000-year anniversary is especially emphasized. Gratitude and best wishes on behalf of Kazan students and colleagues of the celebrant are expressed.
