Abstract
Jaw plate is the consumable component of the jaw crusher machine that widely used in the mining industry in Indonesia. Currently most of these components are still imported. This research is applied research, which originated from the industry request to make tough but wear resistant jaw plate component. Starting from it BBLM conducted research and development of making jaw plate components using casting method. To improve the mechanical properties of jaw plate conducted heat treatment process i.e. austenization followed by water quenching. Using 3 different compositions of manganese steel conducted hardness test, charpy impact test, and microstructure analysis by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. Manganese steel that containing 1% carbon, 13.5% Mn, and not containing chromium had the best toughness. The toughness become greatly increased after the heat treatment, the absorbed energy of 15.88 joules become 131.32 joules. This was due to the formation of a full austenite phase as a result of the dissolution of carbides after heat treatment
