Abstract
The results of the studies on general area and geographical distribution of Carex umbrosa Host (Cyperaceae Juss.) in Ukraine are presented. Border limits of distribution of this species are specified. The limits extend to the west (the Atlantic Europe (Northwest of Spain), to the north (North-Eastern Europe (north-western part of the Russian Federation), in the south and east they coincide Asia Minor (south-eastern part of Turkey). Almost entire area of this species is located in Central Europe. On the territory of Ukraine C. umbrosa is distributed unevenly in five geobotanic provinces: Carpathian-Alpine, Central European, Eastern European forest, steppe East European, Pannonian and 14 territorial-administrative regions: Volyn', Rivne, Zhytomyr, Kyiv, Cherkasy, Ivano-Frankivsk, L'viv, Ternopil', Khmelnytsky, Vinnytsia, Zakarpattia, Chernivtsi, Chernihiv and Sumy. C. umbrosa is located on the eastern limits of general area in Ukraine. C. umbrosa may be found mainly, on the Right Bank of Dnipro River. The most locations of this species are found on the plain area of Zhytomyr and L'viv regions, in mountain region – in Chernivtsi and Ivano-Frankivsk. On the Left Bank of Dnipro River this sedge is presented by several locations in Chernihiv and Sumy regions. C. umbrosa has considerable altitude of high distribution - from the top of the subalpine zone in the Carpathians (1850 m above sea level) to plain Transcarpathia (130 m above sea level). The map of C. umbrosa's distribution shows high level of disjunction of its Ukrainian part area, some significant features of its dynamic habitat and possible prospective of forming general outlines of area of this species on the territory of Ukraine in the future.
