Abstract
Oral route is most preferable route of administration of drugs but it has certain limitations for those drugs which absorb from specific region of gastrointestinal tract. The bioavailability of drugs can be improved by increasing their retention time in the stomach and several approaches are used to increase the gastric retention time of the dosage form. Floating Drug Delivery Systems (FDDS), swelling and expanding systems, bio-adhesive systems, modified shape systems, high density systems are the methods developed for the formulation of novel drug delivery systems, which retained in the stomach for prolonged period of time. The main aim of the review is to describe how to overcome the physiological problems like short gastric residence time and unpredictable gastric emptying times with oral drug delivery system and suggests the detailed information about design, classification, advantages and in-vitro evaluation parameters of FDDS.
