Abstract

After the Industrial Revolution, in the Ottoman Empire, as well as all areas, have been studied to increase to production of with government support in the field of animal husbandry and agriculture. From the period of Mahmud II, factories were opened in order to meet the need of the dress the of newly established army. In order to meet the need of high-quality and flexible wool necessary for this factories were brought merino sheep from abroad. The upbringing of these sheep, which is the property of the sultan, Mihaliç Çiftlikât-ı Hümâyûnu has played an important role. In this article, contributions of the production of merino sheep the Mihaliç Çiftlikât-ı Hümâyûnu, facilities provided by the government with the support of to cultivating merino sheep, problems consisting of in merino breeding and the reasons of failures of breeding sheep are, discussed and examined in the light of archival sources.
