Abstract
In the present investigation, the free radical scavenging activity of the extracts of Hemionitis arifolia leaves prepared using 95% ethanol (HALE) and 50% ethanol (HALH) were determined by ABTS, DPPH, nitric oxide scavenging and lipid peroxidation inhibition assay methods. Preliminary phytochemical studies were performed and identified the presence of phenolics and flavonoids. Free radical scavenging activity of both the extracts was clearly manifested in all the four antioxidant assay methods performed. The IC50 values of both the extracts and the known antioxidant rutin obtained in the ABTS radical scavenging assay was around 3μg/mL. The antioxidant assay was performed on both the extracts and rutin simultaneously using same reagents under identical conditions. The antioxidant potential demonstrated can possibly be due to the phenolic and flavonoid content present in the extract.
