Abstract
This article discusses some of the practices of the Russian Orthodox Church of the late 20th century, perceived as continuation of traditions from the pre-revolutionary Russia. In this case it turns out that a revival or a re-creation of the past leads to the appearance of something new, not existing previously. On the example of particular material the article traces the mechanisms of gradual loss of old traditions and the coming of the new to replace them. It is shown that partly the same mechanisms that were described in the collection The Invention of Tradition influenced the rebirth of church life.
