Abstract
In this article, the issue of the discourse potentialities of language units and possibility of their use in "non-native environment" for the purpose of achievement the "estrangement" effect relating to the basic aesthetic principles of postmodernism is considered on the example of usage conjunctive of indirect speech in the novel “Measuring the World” by Daniel Kehlmann. The violation of the rules of text decoding relates to impossibility of language unit's interpretation based on their system meanings or usual application in a certain discourse type.
