Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of computer-assisted instruction regarding seventh grade primary school students' learning the unit of “Probability and Statistics” compared to traditional teaching method on students' maths achievement. In this study, an experimental research model with pretest posttest control group design was used. The study was carried out in spring term of 2009–2010 academic year by experimental and control groups of 56 seventh grade students in Siirt Sancaklar Primary School. While the experimental group was consisted of 27 students, the control group was consisted of 29 students. Students in the experimental group were instructed within the framework of the plans based on the computer-assisted instruction activities while those in control group were instructed according to course plans prepared appropriate to traditional teaching method. Mathematics achievement test developed by researchers as data gathering tool was applied as pretest and posttest in both experimental and control groups. t-test was used to analyse data. It is determined as a result of this study that the computer-assisted instruction is more effective in increasing student achievement compared to the traditional instruction at the seventh grade mathematics class.
