PREVALENCE AND MANAGEMENT OF OBESITY RELATED HYPERTENSION

Abstract
Background: Obesity is a major health concern and its growing rate raises important issues specific to concurrent rise of the related diseases especially hypertension. This study aimed to observe the prevalence of obesity related hypertension, to identify an optimal treatment regimen for obese hypertensive patient and to determine the relationship between hypertension and obesity based on body mass index and waist circumferences. Methodology: A questioner based study was conducted in outpatient department of different hospitals of Lahore district. The time period of the study was from July 1st 2017 till August 31st 2017. 150 patients were interviewed. The sample technique was convenient random sampling. Results: Total of 150 respondents in this study 40% were males and 60% were females. With mean body mass index (BMI) 48% respondent were overweight and 33% lies in class I obesity. Mean waist circumferences is more in female (more than 88cm), than males(less than 102cm). Most prescribed medications are (22%) NSAIDs, (18%) Statins, (11%) β blockers, (11%) nitrates, (11%) ARBs while calcium channel blockers, loop diuretics, platelets inhibitors, benzodiazepines and tricyclic antidepressants were less prescribed. Conclusion: Obesity related hypertension is more prevalent among females and a positive correlation exists between body mass index (BMI), waist circumferences and hypertension
