Abstract

Teaching English to the students at higher educational institutions is carried out primarily with the aim of mastering the basic skills of speaking, the correct usage of certain phrases and constructions and understanding the phenomena that are the distinctive feature of the English language. Phrasal verb is one of those linguistic phenomena that are not characteristic of the Ukrainian language that is why students encounter certain difficulties, both in understanding the semantics of phrasal verbs and in their use in speech and translation into Ukrainian. The article deals with the characteristic features and classification of phrasal verbs that should be explained to the students to give them clear understanding of this phenomenon of English for their proper usage in the process of communication. The main difficulties faced by foreign students when studying and using English phrasal verbs have been considered as well. The topicality of this subject is determined by the high frequency of phrasal verbs usage, penetration into various functional styles and their importance for the act of communication. Phrasal verbs are becoming more common with the spread of the English language; they are used not only in spoken English, but also in business English, law and other fields. The article focuses on the phrasal verb as a special construction typical of the English language, its definition and characteristic features that differ phrasal verbs from other structures. The term "phrasal verb" is derived from the word "phrase", that is, the smallest unit of syntax. These verbs differ from simple verbs, as they consist of two or more elements. Phrasal verbs make the language more expressive. The speech becomes more natural with their use; therefore, they are very important for those learning English. Phrasal verb is defined as a combination of a monolexemic verb and a special component of adverbial or prepositional origin standing in the postposition to the verb and forming with it more or less stable semantic and syntactic combination. When teaching English phrasal verbs teacher must first explain the distinctive features that differentiate phrasal verbs from simple verbs – such as idiomaticity, high productivity, the possibility to put a postpositional element before or after the noun that is used with this verb, the ability to emotionally and figuratively express nuances of thoughts and feelings, the ability to replace a simple verb and others. Much attention in the article is paid to the description of various classifications of phrasal verbs that are based on a particular criterion such as the degree of semantic unity of the components, separability or inseparability of phrasal verbs, presence or absence of the object etc.
