Abstract
This paper discuss the major initiatives taken for open access journals. The paper also describes current trends in open access and impact of open initiatives in higher education field. The main focus on the Budapest Open Access Initiative, Berlin Declaration, CODATA Open Access initiative and World Summit for Information Society. In India initiatives have been taken to publish online journals in open access.
