Abstract
In the article, relationship between the concepts of virtual educational environment and distance learning course is analyzed. Special attention is paid to requirements that designers of instructional systems for adults' intellectual development should meet, which are to function in the virtual educational environment. Instruction is considered as a process of learning activity control exerted by distance learning systems. The object of this control is the respondent. The purpose of instruction is transition from the current state to another one, desirable both for the tutor and for the respondent. The process of control requires well-arranged system which permanently interacts with the environment and the object of control, monitoring changes, and features both the purpose and the control algorithm. One necessary prerequisite for effective learning process control is clear and precise assessment of the respondent's states and pedagogical (andragogical) influences to be exerted in each case.
