Abstract
The process of using categories in counseling is analyzed. Discussed are four types of categories that occur in the process of communication between the counselor and the client. As a means of analysis, the system-thought-activity approach is used.
Awareness of the categorical structure of thinking enables understanding and solving of problems that from time to time occur with anyone who participates in fulfillment of common tasks. This knowledge is being developed by professionals in cognitive linguistics and in methodology of activity and thought-activity. Further elaboration of this trend in the social psychology domain will promote better and faster training of social workers, counselors, and practical psychologists, whose professional duties include providing assistance in settling difficult situations.
