Abstract
Developing environmental consciousness is a key factor of enhancing the benefits of the efforts on sustainable development. The paper draws up the frames of a comprehensive model and investigates an important component: the knowledge level. Truly responsible decisions cannot be expected without stable and balanced basic of factual and ecological knowledge about social and environmental issues. The sample of the investigation includes the results of more than 700 students (from elementary and secondary schools) and adults (university students). The findings are based on a knowledge test. The results show the critical points and areas of the topic that denotes the further education and development challenges.
