Abstract
The rapid depletion in petroleum reserves had increased the search for alternative fuels. Usage of bio diesel prepared from vegetable oils both edible and non-edible oils has already started, but due to its high viscosity and lower volatility its usage as blends is limited to 20 % only. Addition of nanoparticles to bio diesel can overcome this difficulty and increases its percentage in blended fuel. In this project the performance of a single cylinder four stroke variable compression ratio diesel engine fueled with Hotel Waste Cooking Oil Methyl Ester blends (HWCOME40 and HWCOME50) with and without addition of Al2O3 (20ppm) nanoparticles has been investigated and compared with standard diesel operation. The experiments have been conducted at compression ratios of 15:1, 16:1, 17:1 and 18:1. It is observed that the engine performance in terms of brake thermal efficiency and specific fuel consumption is found better with the use of HWCOME40 Al2O3.
