Abstract
In the process of establishing market relations and their improvement the state's role in the economy has declined. This gave rise to some imbalances and problems in the economic development of the territorial units. Economic shifts in Georgia are characterized by the destruction of the old, inefficient, strict directive planning system. Fast denial of un alternative planning in some cases led to negative consequences. In developed countries, on the contrary - interest in strategic planning as defined instruments private and public effortshas grown. The strategic planning gained popularity in the 1980s, in the number of European countries.. This was due to increasing competition and complicated management mechanisms. The paper deals with the positive role of strategic planning in the local territorial development.
