Abstract
In the present study, room temperature mechanical properties such as impact and compressive strengths of Mg-3Zn-0.7Zr-1Cu/μAl2O3,Mg-3Zn-0.7Zr-1Cu/(μAl2O3 + nAl2O3) with different combinations are examined. All the composite formulations were produced by blend-press-sinter powder metallurgy process accompanied by hot extrusion. Results revealed that the use of hybrid alumina reinforcements significantly enhanced the compressive and impact properties of Mg-3Zn-0.7Zr-1Cu alloy when compared to micro alumina alone reinforced composite. The improved compressive strength was caused by the reduced twinning activity due to grain refinement. A slight improvement in the impact strength as observed with the increase in wt. % of nanoalumina could be the result of well-refined matrix structure with sufficient bonding strength.
