Abstract
There are several factors which provide the text to be coherent in accordance with the relation between the reader, writer, and text and their interaction. Text is a cognitive construct which helps readers to comprehend the meaning with the cooperation of reader-writer-text. Comprehending the meaning of the text is a process which demands readers to be mentally active continuously. During this mental process there are some codes that the writer encoded linguistically. Readers need to look at the linguistic tools and the context to comprehend the text. The linguistic tools are used to encode the coherence and trigger some processes mentally for readers. This study tries to indicate how cohesion bond contributes the process of achieving the coherence. Hoey asserts that lexical cohesion contributes to structure the text. According to Hoey, sentences link up by means of lexical repetition and some sentences which are called central contribute more to continue the flow of information. Other sentences called marginal don’t have a connection with the flow of information. Their information value is low compared to the central ones. The coherence of the text will not be damaged even if these sentences are taken out from the text. The target of this study is to reveal the contribution of cohesion to coherence and how repetition works to obtain cohesion and coherence. The database is the article named “Cesetler Sahipsiz Kaldı” in Birgün newspaper. As a result of the analysis, the links and the degree of frequency have been identified and shown.
