Abstract

The paper discusses about the characteristics of leachate generation from municipal solid waste landfilling site of vellalore town panchayat, Coimbatore city, India. Leachate generation is a major problem, which causes threats to surface and ground water and soil. Leachate is polluted waste water which percolates through the body of landfill. The improper management, it has high possibility of leachate leakage through the surface. This research work aim to serve as a base line data for the implementation of most suitable techniques and methods to reducing leakage contamination before discharge in to soil. Leachate samples were collected at landfill site analyzed for various characteristic parameters to estimate its pollution potential. The result shows that the leachate was highly deterioration and may leads to increase in ground and surface water and soil contamination.
