Abstract
This article deals with the "unexpected" nominations, or nominations, not motivated in the context, which can cause difficulties at interpretation and translation based on the short story The Overcoat by N.V. Gogol and its Polish translations. The role of these nominations in development of certain motives in the narration and in restoration of the backstory lost in narration is shown.
