Abstract
SMEs are forced to be more competitive, so that their managers need relevant information for dealing with uncertainty. Because of the importance of information in organizations, this paper makes a theoretical review and analysis of recent studies on the information that the managers of SMEs need. Also we conducted seven interviews and the application of a questionnaire to 625 managers of SMEs in the province of Tungurahua (Ecuador), to investigate their association to factors such as size, age, industry, activity, age and academic degree. The results of a multiple analysis of variance (Manova) indicated that managers prefer operational and personal information. Among the factors that significantly influence the production of information is the size and academic degree of managers.
