Abstract

The aim of the work was to shorten the duration of radiation treatment, reduce the frequency and severity of skin radiations and achieve a pronounced economic and cosmetic effect while maintaining the effectiveness of treatment by developing non-standard dose fractionation regimens for brachytherapy of stage I-II skin cancer. Material and methods. The material of the study was the results of examination and treatment of 120 patients suffering from stage I-II skin cancer. The patients were divided into two groups: those with brachytherapy in the mode of dose hypofractionation and those with brachytherapy in a single exposure mode. Results. Based on the linear-quadratic model (LQ model) of cellular survival, the modes of dose hypofractionation and single irradiation for brachytherapy of stage I-II skin cancer were developed and introduced into clinical practice. Conclusions. The use of brachytherapy in the modes of dose hypofractionation and single exposure allowed us to shorten significantly the treatment time, reduce the frequency and severity of acute radiation reactions and late radiation damage to the skin, achieve complete resorption of the tumor in 100% of cases, provide a pronounced economic effect as well as obtain excellent and good cosmetic results.
