Abstract

The paper presents results of a study of ways of representing allusions to proper names in English. Analysis of a vast corpus of data obtained from modern British fiction has shown that the most common way to represent an allusion is to use a proper name in various linguistic contexts; a less frequent way is to use an adjective derived from the proper name; and a very rare phenomenon is the formation of a verb by conversion.
