Abstract
The article analyzes the content of the concepts "knowledge" and "independence". Various approaches to the definition of the concept of "cognitive independence" are disclosed, the author's interpretation is presented. On the basis of the analysis of scientific and pedagogical literature, different levels of the formation of the cogni- tive independence of students are revealed. Based on various criteria: the degree of mastering the methods of independent cognitive activity; the formation of knowledge and skills of students and their relation to education- al activity; degree of ownership of methods of independent cognitive activity
