Abstract

The fourteenth century witnessed the emergence of powers in South India against the North, which is hugely responsible for protecting the distinct cultural identity of the region.1 The disintegration of the Tughlaq Dynasty in South India and in the Deccan region led to the birth of the Vijayanagar Kingdom in South India and the Bahmani Sultanate in Central India, both of which dominated the south of the Vindhyas for a period of more than 200 years before they were subdued by the Mughal Empire.2 It is relevant in this light to understand the nature of Vijayanagar-Bahmani relations, which comprises the area of concern for this paper. Such understanding shall aid to comprehend the effects of these relations on the political scenario in the region, following long even after the weathering of the two kingdoms. Dr. Aravind M.
