Prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity in people with intellectual disabilities

Abstract

A prospective and descriptive study was performed to characterize psychiatric comorbidity in students with mental disabilities "Special School Batalla de Jobito" Guantanamo. The sample consisted of 26 children aged between 6 and 12 years; with no less than three and a maximum of five psychiatric comorbidity, without somatic diseases, selected intentionally. It was used psychiatric and social history, record of the CDO, Psycho pedagogues, speech therapy, oral methods and written language; interviews with teachers, psychologists, speech therapist and use of observational techniques at school. Psychiatric comorbidity was prevailed: disorder attention deficit and hyperkinetic; organic personality disorder causes; specific learning disabilities; generalized delay language development. It is concluded that psychiatric comorbidity in the patients studied is a health problem.
