Morbidity and mortality from esophageal cancer in the General Teaching Hospital "Dr. Agostinho Neto "Guantanamo

Abstract
A retrospective longitudinal study is done from the Department of Surgery of the Hospital "Dr. Agostinho Neto" Guantanamo, covering the period January 1981 to December 2011, 50 cases were included. There was a predominance of patients living in the interior of the province, the male and the age group between 50-69 years old. The first symptom to appear was dysphagia, in isolation, in 80 % of pathological cases .The predominant form was the epidermoid carcinoma in 88 % of cases; between toxic habits, snuff occupy 82.0%; stage at diagnosis: I (0%), II (12 %), III (80 %) and IV (8 %). The treatment consisted of making receptive surgery plus adjuvant treatment, all operated patients. Surgical treatment of esophageal cancer remains a high mortality and, among other features, a predominance of males, older than 50 years, residents of the interior of the province, smokers, drinkers and coffee. Squamous cell carcinoma was found as predominant pathologic form.
