Abstract

Aim. To describe academic stress, stressors and coping in dental students at the Metropolitan University Studies Center Hidalgo [CEUMH]. Methodology. This is a cross-sectional descriptive observational study based on a probabilistic sample of 69 dental students, distributed in a stratified manner by year of studies: first (n = 12), third (n = 14), fifth (n = 18), seventh (n = 10) and eighth (n = 15). The measurement of the academic stress variable was made through the validated "SISCO Inventory" questionnaire, which evaluates: academic stressors, stress manifestations, and coping strategies. Academic performance variable was measured through the student's average grade at the end of the previous four-month period Results. 93% reported presenting stress with an intensity of 3.5, on a scale of 1 to 5. The stressors were: overload of tasks and work and exams. The main physical reactions presented by the students were sleep disorders [22%]. And food consumption; increase or reduction of food consumption. The coping strategies were; elaboration of a plan and execution of tasks with 41% and assertive ability to defend our preferences, ideas or feelings without harming others, with 34%. Average academic performance was 8.17, in a population of 46 students from different quarters. The level of student stress is high with a level of 4 on a scale of 1 to 5. Conclusion. Stress is a determining factor in school activities. Among the coping strategies, counseling sessions and development of research projects must be implemented . Although being stressors, a health professional without a scientific profile would become a non positive professional for the development of this academic area. The above requires continuous evaluation processes that allow feedback.
