Abstract
The article examines the current trends in the development of the English language which has under- gone tremendous changes as a result of its global expansion. The authors analyze the reasons and consequences of the sociolinguistic paradigm shift including linguistic diversity as well as the notion of linguistic repertoire defined as linguistic, semiotic, sociocultural resources used for successful interaction which introduce the new forms of speech behavior in interlanguage communication. The paper also deals with the concept of English as an International Language which reflects its modern status
