Abstract

The paper considers the question on establishing the actual reliability of drainage in agriculture with the purpose of increasing its operational efficiency and development of special measures on repair and reconstruction. The major objective of the study is the improvement of method for establishing the reliability of drainage systems. In order to establish the reliability of drainage, on the basis of probability theory and mathematical statistics is proposed a completely new method, which is realized through specific experimental data or statistical materials. The primary indicator in using the proposed method is the depth of the groundwater level and soil salinity, and the second indicator is the drainage flow module. By means of the proposed method, 12 key areas are assessed over the reliability of drainage system in Shirvan district of Azerbaijan. The results demonstrated extremely unsatisfactory state of actual reliability of drainage system and its value was 0.31. Therefore, against the background of existing drainage network the secondary salinity of soil that results in loss of lands from agriculture turnover and substantially reduces the crop yields is occurring. The article presents a brief literature review on researched subject. Analysis of world literature shows that there is no consensus on selection of indicators for assessing the reliability of drainage and a single formula for its estimation. All told, the assessment of reliability, as expressed in popular methods, in terms of one aspect characterizing the work of drainage should not be regarded reliable, as the efficiency of drainage work is affected by several first and secondary factors. For example, in a particular case on defining the reliability of drainage has been revealed that reliability defined on the basis of drainage flow module is equal to 0.91, but in fact, the actual operability and efficiency of existing drainage system turned out to be in a very unsatisfactory state.
